PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Bedard’s 302 Yards, 4 Scores Lead Servite by Saddleback
FULLERTON — David Bedard gained 302 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns to lead host Servite to a 47-21 victory over Saddleback in a Golden West League football game Friday at Cal State Fullerton.
The amazing thing about Bedard’s evening was that it could have been a lot better. Two Servite penalties nullified touchdown runs of 73 and 48 yards.
Both offenses started quickly. Bedard’s 51-yard touchdown run on the game’s third play gave the Friars (6-2, 3-0) a 6-0 lead.
Saddleback (2-6, 0-3) wasted no time on the next drive. Quarterback Danny Rodriguez connected with Hector Hernandez on a 55-yard touchdown pass on the Roadrunners’ first play. Joseph Meza’s extra point give Saddleback a 7-6 lead with 10 minutes left in the first quarter.
Servite’s next drive ended a four-play, 55-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown by Bedard, giving the Friars a 12-7 lead, a lead they would not lose.
Servite’s next score came on a 99-yard punt return by Bedard. In the first half, Bedard had 229 of his 302 all-purpose yards.
Bedard was not the only successful Friar running back. Marvin Smith rushed for 95 yards in 14 carries and one touchdown.
Rodriguez was 10 for 24 for 151 yards and two touchdowns and Danny Varino rushed for 52 yards in 14 carries to lead Saddleback.
