ROUNDUP : Arce Leads Palmdale to Championship

Antonio Arce of Palmdale High won his second consecutive individual title in leading the Falcons to their third consecutive championship in the Golden League cross-country finals on Wednesday.

Arce, the runner-up in the 3,200 meters in the State track and field championships in June, timed a course record 15 minutes 49 seconds over three miles at Barrel Springs Hill in Palmdale.

Arce eclipsed his course best of 16:08 set earlier this season.

Junior Mario Arce, Antonio’s brother, finished second in 16:47 as Palmdale placed five runners among the top six finishers for a 18-point total.

Ridgecrest Burroughs was second with 68, followed by Littlerock with 91.

The top three teams automatically qualified for the Southern Section preliminaries on Nov. 12. So did the top three individuals among the top six finishers who are not on a qualifying team.

Quartz Hill, led by individual winner Danielle Day, won its fourth consecutive girls’ title.

Day, a freshman, timed 20:11 as the Rebels totaled 35 points to turn back Highland (61) and Ridgecrest Burroughs (73).

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

L.A. Lutheran d. Pacific Christian, 15-10, 15-11, 6-15, 15-7--Heather Sanchez and Holly Roepke each had eight kills to lead the Lions (13-2, 10-1) in a Heritage League match at Montecito Park.

Birmingham d. Poly, 15-7, 16-14, 15-17, 15-11--Maricela Valdez recorded 20 kills and seven aces and seven blocks to pace Birmingham (8-5) in a nonleague game.

Julie Yamada added 11 kills.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Agoura 28, Thousand Oaks 8--Chris Driscoll scored 11 goals to set a school single-game record in a Marmonte League finale at Agoura. Driscoll broke the old mark of 10, which he tied earlier this season.

The Chargers (17-4, 7-1) clinched at least a tie for the league championship with Royal. Harvey Wilford added eight goals for Agoura.

Royal 21, Newbury Park 6--David Radka, Bill Bruininga and Randy Owens each scored four goals to lead the visiting Highlanders (13-11, 6-1) in a Marmonte League match. Royal needs a victory on Friday against Westlake to clinch a share of its 14th consecutive league title.

Crespi 24, Alemany 6--The Celts outscored the Indians, 9-0, in the first quarter of the Mission League match. Mike Scarcelli scored eight goals for Crespi (14-10, 5-3). David Brea added six goals.

Loyola 17, Notre Dame 16--Billy Larsen scored eight goals in the Mission League match to eliminate Notre Dame (17-8, 5-5) from playoff contention. Stephen Taylor scored six goals and Chris Crowley scored four for Notre Dame.

COLLEGE SOCCER

Cal State Dominguez Hills 2, The Master’s 1--Bryan Lee’s second-half goal tied the nonleague match, but Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the game-winner moments later at Master’s.

Goalkeeper Kris Bage had four saves for Master’s (15-3-1). Radim Konecny scored against Bage one on one in the 62nd minute for the decisive goal for the Toros (9-6-2).
