LAKE FOREST : Deputies to Check for Drunk Drivers

Orange County sheriff’s deputies will conduct drunk-driving checks at an undisclosed location today.

The checkpoint--the city’s first--will be on a well-traveled street. Drivers will be stopped randomly between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and asked by a team of sheriff’s deputies if they have been drinking alcohol.

“This is the first one since Lake Forest has been incorporated,” Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Nesmith said. “The purpose is to provide a public deterrent to drinking and driving.”

The checkpoint is funded by a $500,000 state grant for Sheriff’s Department operations in South County.

The funding also allows the city to organize a special anti-drunk driving team consisting of two deputies who patrol the streets.

State officials hope to gauge the effectiveness of a widespread law enforcement effort against drunk driving.

Other communities that will benefit from the grant include Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point and San Clemente.
