Royal 14, Thousand Oaks 12--Royal scored on a 65-yard pass play from Wes Lagatta to Brendan Gibson on the game’s first play and held off a rally by host Thousand Oaks. Thousand Oaks (3-5, 2-4) drove deep into Royal territory on seven of its 10 possessions, but could not score until midway through the fourth quarter.

Rob Read recovered Highlander running back Jerome Lee’s third fumble and Bill Sperry scored on a 10-yard sweep one play later to cut Royal’s lead to 14-6. The point-after attempt sailed wide left.

Read sacked Lagatta on the next series, forcing a Highlander punt. Sophomore quarterback Scott McEwan marched Thousand Oaks 74 yards in five plays, capped by a 45-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Eric Allen with 3:35 to play. The conversion pass failed, and Royal ran out the clock.

Lagatta connected on six of nine passes for 180 yards. Gibson had four catches for 107 yards.

Jim Ange caught three passes for 100 yards for Thousand Oaks. Sperry intercepted two passes and linebacker Greg Gallup recovered two fumbles.
