PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Armendariz’s Touchdown, Interception Spark Century
ANAHEIM — Sometimes you can’t tell a player with a program.
Take Zeke Armendariz, for instance.
There was No. 53 for Century scoring a touchdown on a fumble recovery and intercepting a pass to pace the Centurions (5-4, 3-1) to a 17-7 victory over Katella (0-9, 0-4) Friday night in Empire League play at Glover Stadium.
This sets up an Empire League title showdown next week, when Century plays Kennedy and El Dorado plays Loara. All four teams are 3-1 in league.
The program had No. 53 as Carlos Martinez.
Bill Brown, Century’s coach, said, “That roster was from an old program.”
But there was no mistaking Armendariz’s contributions.
The 6-foot-2, 203-pound senior linebacker picked up a fumble by Katella’s Willie Demyers and ran 21 yards to give Century a 14-7 lead with 6 minutes 47 seconds left in the third quarter.
Armendariz intercepted a Sal Viramontes pass with 6:02 left in the game. It was one of seven turnovers for Katella on the night.
“Some teams are like that,” Brown said. “That’s been the story of their season.”
Viramontes scored on a two-yard run with 51 seconds left in the first quarter for Katella. Baltazar Vega set up the touchdown with a 59-yard run.
Century tied the score in the second quarter on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Stanley Villanueva to Ignacio Vega. Vega also kicked a 17-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
