PREP EXTRA / FRIDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : SEA VIEW LEAGUE : Corona del Mar Squeezes by Woodbridge
IRVINE — Corona del Mar held off a late Woodbridge rally to post a 7-6 Sea View League victory and clinch a Southern Section playoff berth Thursday night at Irvine High.
Corona del Mar improved to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in League. If Irvine wins its game Saturday against Santa Margarita, the Sea Kings will finish in third place. If the Vaqueros lose, Corona del Mar will finish second.
Woodbridge (5-5, 0-5) had a chance to win the game in the final minute.
The Warriors took over on their 15-yard line with two minutes remaining and marched the ball to the Corona del Mar 32.
But Woodbridge eventually ran short on time. As time expired, Nathan Bennett’s 52-yard field goal fell short.
Corona del Mar took a 7-0 lead when quarterback Josh Walz connected with Miles Davis on a 65-yard touchdown pass with 5:59 remaining in the first half.
But Woodbridge closed the gap to 7-6 on a seven-yard touchdown run by Theo Wakefield with 1:35 remaining in the half. However, Bennett missed the point-after kick.
Woodbridge had a chance to go ahead early in the fourth quarter when it advanced the ball to the Corona del Mar 11.
But Darren MacDonald intercepted a pass at the Sea King six-yard line.
