HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Burbank Knocks Out San Marino in Tennis

Analisa Swan and Lolita Alcocer swept their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to lead Burbank High to a 13-5 victory over San Marino Thursday in the first round of the Division III tennis tournament, pushing the Bulldogs’ record to 11-4.

San Marino had not lost a first-round match in 20 consecutive years.

In other first-round matches:

Newport Harbor 10, Westlake 8--Sarah Hawkins recorded three singles victories to lead Newport Harbor in a Division I match. In doubles, Westlake’s Allyson Whitfield and Katy Smith recorded three victories.

Camarillo 14, Rio Mesa 4--Arizona-bound Monique Allegre led a trio of singles sweeps by the Scorpions (18-2) in a Division I match.

Rio Mesa finished 12-6.

Nordhoff 10, Carpinteria 8--The Rangers’ reward for defeating Carpinteria in the Division V playoffs is a Saturday matchup with second-seeded Duarte.

Quartz Hill 9, Whittier 9--Golden League champion Quartz Hill tied Whittier but lost in total games in the Division IV playoffs. Quartz Hill (12-7) was led by its No. 1 doubles team of Rebecca Young and Achala Bhaskara, who swept three matches. Del Rio League runner-up Whittier was paced by its No. 1 singles player, June Liu, who swept three matches.

WATER POLO

Long Beach Wilson 22, Crespi 10--The Bruins outscored the Celts, 9-1, in the first quarter and didn’t look back. Mike Scarcelli, Ricky Bejune and David Brea each had three goals for Crespi (15-12).

La Canada 7, Mira Costa 5--Goalie Kevin Carberry made 14 of his 17 saves in the second half to help the Spartans (14-9) upset the Ocean League champions in the Division III playoffs.

Brian Ellis scored four goals for La Canada.

VOLLEYBALL

San Marcos d. Newbury Park, 7-15, 3-15, 16-18--Newbury Park (14-3) came alive after a slow beginning, but fell in Division I.

Harvard-Westlake d. Canyon, 15-2, 15-1, 15-10--Leslie Coben had 10 kills and Amanda Selby added six to lead Harvard-Westlake (13-4) in a Division II match.

Bell-Jeff d. Desert, 15-4, 10-15, 13-15, 15-6, 15-5--Bell-Jeff (17-2) scored the first seven points in the deciding game of the Division V match. Letty Cabrera had 21 kills and 12 digs for the Guards. Stefanie Nocum added 45 assists and nine aces.

Louisville d. Burroughs, 15-8, 15-2, 15-12--Audra Duda had 18 kills and Melinda Palumbo had 37 assists to lead Louisville in a Division II match.

Nordhoff d. Rosary, 15-10, 15-3, 15-2--Jami Sawyer had a team-high 11 kills and five aces for Nordhoff (14-1) in Division IV.

Providence d. Avalon, 15-5, 15-1, 12-15, 15-5--Melanie Morales had 14 kills to lead third-seeded Providence (13-5) in Division VI at Providence.

Cornerstone Christian d. Viewpoint, 13-15, 15-10, 15-12, 17-15--Lindsay Welch had nine kills for Viewpoint (14-3) in Division VI.

Thatcher d. L.A. Lutheran, 12-15, 15-6, 15-9, 15-8--Stefanie Warren’s 24 kills led Thatcher (11-2) to a come-from-behind victory in a Division VI match at L.A. Lutheran (14-3).

L.A. Baptist d. Morro Bay, 15-7, 15-9, 15-8--Darcie Frazier had 16 kills for the Knights in Division V. Setter Tunde Hrotko added 28 assists for the Knights (16-0).

La Reina d. Atascadero 15-6, 11-15, 15-5, 15-5--Shane Anderson had 17 kills and 14 blocks for La Reina (18-3) in Division IV.
