PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE : Aliso Niguel Ends University Threat as Clock Runs Out
IRVINE — Junior Mike Campbell kicked two field goals to lead Aliso Niguel to a 12-7 Pacific Coast League victory over University Friday night at Irvine High School.
Aliso Niguel, which finished the season 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the Pacific Coast League, held off a late rally by University (4-5-1, 2-2-1).
University, which finished third in the Pacific Coast League, clinched a playoff berth with a 30-30 tie last week against Costa Mesa.
Aliso Niguel moved out to a 12-7 lead on Campbell’s 28-yard field goal with 1 minute 16 seconds remaining in the game.
But University drove to the Aliso Niguel 12-yard line with 10 seconds left. However, on a second down play, Scott Nemeth intercepted Alan Price’s pass as time expired.
Campbell’s 35-yard field goal gave Aliso Niguel a 3-0 lead with 4:04 remaining in the second quarter.
On its next possession, Aliso Niguel had the ball at its own 23-yard line, but on a first down play, the ball was snapped over the head of Nemeth, the quarterback.
University defensive end Sepher Sharifi recovered the ball in the end zone to put University ahead, 7-3, with 1:47 left in the half.
Aliso Niguel went ahead, 9-7, on an 18-yard touchdown run by Trent Perley with 11:15 left in the fourth quarter. The kick failed.
Perley led Aliso Niguel, rushing for 119 yards in 16 carries.
