THOROUGHBRED RACING : What’s $100 Mean to $15-Million Man?

After Smith collected $156,000, his 10% share of the first-place purses won by Cherokee Run in the Sprint and Tikkanen in the Turf Stakes, the Churchill stewards fined the jockey $100 for wearing a turtleneck shirt that had a brand name on the collar.

Smith’s Breeders’ Cup outlay increased his 1994 purses to more than $15 million, breaking the record of $14.8 million set by Jose Santos in 1988. Smith will be at Hollywood Park on Sunday, trying to increase the total. He has mounts on Lahint in the $400,000 Hollywood Derby and Forest Gazelle in the $150,000 Hollywood Turf Express.

Smith also broke his record of 62 stakes in a year when he added Nos. 63 and 64 in the Breeders’ Cup.

Lahint has won three of 10 starts this year, with the New York-based Smith aboard for all the victories. Lahint is winless in seven stakes starts.

Horse Racing Notes

Pat Day, who also won two Breeders’ Cup races, is second to Smith in the standings with $13.5 million. Day has three stakes assignments Sunday--Tabasco Cat in the Hollywood Derby, Wild Gold in the Turf Express and Wharf in the $250,000 Citation Handicap. . . . Randy Romero, who quit riding in July to become a bloodstock agent and then changed his mind recently, starts working at Hollywood Park on Sunday. Romero, 37, has ridden horses that have earned $63 million. . . . Alex Solis, who rode Johann Quatz to a second-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, retains the mount for the $4-million Japan Cup in Tokyo on Nov. 27. . . . Memo, the 7-year-old gelding who holds the Hollywood Park seven-furlong record of 1:20 2/5, has been retired. . . . Hollywood Park will offer betting on races from Hong Kong, starting Friday night.
