OPEC Agrees to Freeze Output: The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries has agreed to cap its current oil production through the end of 1995 in a bid to boost sagging world oil prices. The decision was unanimous, an OPEC source said. The current oil output ceiling is 24.52 million barrels a day. Before the announcement, cargoes of the global benchmark crude for January loading were offered at $17 a barrel in Asia trading. While oil prices rose in Asia as it became clear OPEC members were moving toward an agreement on a one-year cap, analysts in New York were skeptical that the move would have much impact on prices. January crude oil contracts ended a penny higher at $17.56 on the New York Merc after rising as high as $17.95 in earlier trading.
