India, wags once said, seemed to have been expressly created to provide the British ruling classes with a venue for outdoor sports, none of which was more prized than shikar --hunting.

The world, though, has changed. Britain’s Prince Philip, president of the World Wildlife Fund, will address India’s “first national conservation congress” Wednesday. The prince is taking part in events marking the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Fund for Nature-India.
