Crews Battle Fire Near Piru School
Ventura County firefighters responded late Wednesday to a brush fire near Piru Elementary School. No structures were immediately threatened, fire officials said.
Several fire engines, a tanker truck, and hand crews were called in as the 10 p.m. fire spread quickly over 20 acres of hillside about one-quarter mile from the school.
“It’s a full brush response,” said Charles Carranza, spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department. He said 8 to 10 m.p.h. winds were fanning the blaze.
He said the fire was headed toward the Piru Mansion, but was no immediate threat.
A nearby resident said sprinklers were turned on at the school.
“The whole area is burning,” said Jon Hur, referring to the blaze that he could see from his Center Street home.
