BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Begins Season With Victory
Wes Badorek made the game-winning basket with three seconds remaining to give Newport Harbor a 61-60 victory over Westminster in the first round of the Daily Pilot Tip-Off tournament Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.
Will Rankin had 14 points for the Sailors. Scott Mizufuka scored 16 for Westminster in the season opener for both teams.
In another tournament game:
Corona del Mar 52, Verdugo Hills 44--Dom DeGrazier had 11 points to lead the Sea Kings (1-0). Teammate Joel Owen had 10 points.
In the Buena Park Elks tournament:
Rancho Alamitos 67, Santa Ana 60--Randy Parrish had 26 points and Juan Toscanini added 12 for Rancho Alamitos (1-0). Danny Rivero and Luis Garcia each had 19 points for Santa Ana (0-1).
Calvary Chapel 69, Downey 58--Joe Ortiz scored 16 points to lead Calvary Chapel (1-0). Nate Morton added 15 and Issac Leasau scored 14.
In the Brea-Olinda boys’ tournament:
Brea-Olinda 63, Canyon 52--Brian Seaton had 18 points and Matt Boderford added 14 for Brea-Olinda (1-0). Ryan Walker had 16 points to lead Canyon (0-1).
In the Mission Viejo Diablo Inferno tournament:
Foothill 75, Alhambra Keppel 69--Senior Dan Almquist led the Knights with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Marc Brown added 16 points and 11 rebounds and John Brittingham scored 13 points and had 10 assists. Foothill (1-0) will play Mission Viejo at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
Mission Viejo 82, Costa Mesa 52--Austin Moherman and Tyler Kalklosch each had 16 points to lead Mission Viejo (1-0).
Cypress 71, San Clemente 53--Chad Boberg had 20 points and Derek Mitchell had 16 for visiting Cypress in the season opener for both teams. Gabe Gardner had 16 points to lead San Clemente.
In the National Sports Grill Invitational boys’ basketball tournament:
Woodbridge 68, Loara 38--Chris Burgess had 20 points and Eric Ripley added 12 for visiting Woodbridge (1-0). Neil Thomas had nine points for Loara (0-1).
Laguna Beach 65, Western 59--Gordon Osborn had 20 points and Brandon Bloch 19 to lead Laguna Beach (1-0). Paul Lindemeyer had a game-high 24 for Western.
Savanna 63, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul 59--David Draghinas scored 21 points and Canhhuy Nguyen had 20 to lead Savanna (1-0), which trailed by one at halftime.
In nonleague games:
Southern California Christian 108, Pasadena Pacific Christian 19--Josh Cameron scored 34 points in one half of play for the Flames (1-0). Cameron, the Arrowhead League MVP last season, made 12 of 14 shots for SCC, which led, 34-0, after one quarter.
Huntington Beach Claremont 68, St. Michael’s Prep 23--Ryan Cronkite scored 20 points for visiting Claremont (1-0).
Estancia 67, Capistrano Valley 55--Chris Candlish scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Estancia (1-0).
Claremont Webb 50, Orangewood Academy 48--Matt Bennie scored 23 points for Orangewood Academy (0-1) in its first Southern Section basketball game. Center Micah Lloyd, 6 feet 8, had eight points and eight blocks for the Spartans.
Liberty Christian 78, Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep 57--Bob McClung had 35 points, five assists and five rebounds to lead host Liberty Christian (1-0). Bryan Avery had 23 points, including five three-pointers.
Laguna Hills 58, Los Amigos 48--Mark Scaglione had 20 points and Colin Bishop had 13 to lead visiting Laguna Hills (1-0). Chris Francis had 10 points for Los Amigos (0-1).
