Milk On-Screen
“The Mayor of Castro Street,” a film version of Milk’s life based on Randy Shilts’ book, has been in the works for five years. If all goes as planned, Storyline Productions, which owns the rights, will start production this year at Warner Bros. Dustin Hoffman is reportedly in the running to play Milk.
Storyline partner Craig Zadan, one of the film’s producers, would only say that “serious discussions are under way with a major star and a major director.”
Oliver Stone, another producer on the film, had been set to direct the picture but backed out after directing “JFK,” saying that he did not want to direct another assassination picture. Gus Van Zant was then tapped but left over “creative differences” last year.
