A look at previous games that have involved the four teams playing today for the right to advance to Super Bowl XXIX on Jan. 29 in Miami:

SAN FRANCISCO vs. DALLAS

1993: Dallas 38, San Francisco 21

The Cowboys scored on four of their first five possessions and won easily.

1992: Dallas 30, San Francisco 20

Four 49er turnovers and two long second-half touchdown drives broke open a 10-10 game. The Cowboys were 1-15 three seasons earlier.

1981: San Francisco 28, Dallas 27

“The Catch.”

1971: Dallas 14, San Francisco 3

The Cowboys’ George Andrie intercepted a pass from John Brodie, leading to the first touchdown and Mike Ditka made a key third-down catch late in the game, leading to final touchdown.

1970: Dallas 17, San Francisco 10

Twenty-one points were scored in the third quarter, 14 by the Cowboys on the heels of two interceptions thrown by Brodie.

OTHER DALLAS APPEARANCES

1982: Washington 31, Dallas 17

The Redskins relied on three plays to defeat the Cowboys. John Riggins left, John Riggins right, John Riggins up the middle. Riggins rushed 36 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns. 1980: Philadelphia 20, Dallas 7

In zero-degree temperature, Wilbert Montgomery rushed for 194 yards, and fumbles by Danny White and Tony Dorsett led to 10 third-quarter points for the agles.

1978: Dallas 28, Rams 0

After a scoreless first half, the Cowboy defense took over, intercepting Pat Haden three times and Vince Ferragamo twice.

1977: Dallas 23, Minnesota 6

The Cowboy defense, led by Harvey Martin, Too Tall Jones and Hollywood Henderson, held Chuck Foreman to 69 yards rushing and kept Viking receiver Ahmad Rashad under wraps all day.

1975: Dallas 37, Rams 7

Roger Staubach passed for four touchdowns as the Cowboys humiliated the Rams.

1973: Minnesota 27, Dallas 10

With star tackle Bob Lilly out because of a bad back, the Cowboys could not stop the Viking running game.

1972: Washington 26, Dallas 3

Coach Tom Landry left Herb Adderly on the bench when Charley Waters broke his arm in the third quarter, instead going with the inexperienced Mark Washington. The Redskins exploited him for 16 fourth-quarter points.

1967: Green Bay 21, Dallas 17

In 13-below-zero weather, the Cowboys held a 17-14 lead late in the game. On fourth and goal from the one with 20 seconds to play, Bart Starr plunged into the end zone. 1966 : Green Bay 34, Dallas 27

Starr passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns. A late Cowboy threat ended when Don Meredith’s fourth-down pass was intercepted by Tom Brown in the end zone.

OTHER SAN FRANCISCO APPEARANCES

1990: N.Y. Giants 15, San Francisco 13

Lawrence Taylor recovered a Roger Craig fumble with 2:36 to play and the 49ers leading, 13-12. As time expired, Matt Bahr kicked his fifth field goal.

1989: San Francisco 30, Rams 3

lipper Anderson was open for a touchdown late in the first quarter, but safety Ronnie Lott raced across the field and batted the ball away at the last second. After that, it was all 49ers.

1988: San Francisco 28, Chicago 3

Joe Montana passed for three touchdowns, two to Jerry Rice, and the 49er defense pressured quarterback Jim McMahon all day.

1984: San Francisco 23, Chicago 0

The Bear defense came in with the reputation, but the 49er defense left with the victory as they sacked Steve Fuller nine times in the shutout.

1983: Washington 24, San Francisco 21

Trailing, 21-0, heading into the fourth quarter, the 49ers scored three touchdowns in eight minutes but the Redskins won when Mark Moseley kicked a 25-yard field goal with 40 seconds to play.

PITTSBURGH APPEARANCES

1984: Miami 45, Pittsburgh 28

The Steelers tried to neutralize Dan Marino with blitzes. It didn’t quite work, as Marino passed for 421 yards and four touchdowns.

1979: Pittsburgh 27, Houston 13

The Steelers held rushing champion Earl Campbell to 15 yards, and Terry Bradshaw passed for 219 yards and two touchdowns.

1978: Pittsburgh 34, Houston 5

The Steelers scored 17 points in the final 48 seconds of the first half for a 31-3 lead.

1976: Oakland 24, Pittsburgh 7

The Steelers’ Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier missed the game with injuries, paralyzing the offense. Pittsburgh didn’t get a first down until the second quarter.

1975: Pittsburgh 16, Oakland 10

Neither team reached the end zone until the final six minutes. The Raiders recovered an onside kick with six seconds left, but Cliff Branch was stopped on the 15 as time ran out.

1974: Pittsburgh 24, Oakland 13

The Steelers intercepted Ken Stabler twice and scored 21 points in the fourth quarter.

1972: Miami 21, Pittsburgh 17

Key play: In the second quarter, Dolphin punter Larry Seiple noticed all the Steelers had dropped back. Seiple ran for 37 yards, and Larry Csonka scored three plays later.

SAN DIEGO APPEARANCES

1981: Cincinnati 27, San Diego 7

The Chargers’ Dan Fouts was ineffective passing in wind-swept below-zero weather, throwing two interceptions.

1980: Oakland 34, San Diego 27

Fouts and Jim Plunkett traded touchdown passes before the Raiders’ Mark van Eeghen chewed up yards and the clock late in the game, allowing the Raiders to hang on.
