BURBANK : City’s Quake Damage Rises to $66.1 Million
The city of Burbank sustained $66.1 million in damage from the Northridge earthquake, more than twice as much as earlier reported, according to updated figures from the city finance department.
New estimates show that there was $58 million in unspecified damage to privately owned facilities in commercial, industrial, manufacturing and entertainment businesses.
Another $8.1 million in losses, officials say, included damaged public buildings, roadways and a power station in Sylmar that is partly owned by Burbank.
The earthquake status report indicates that the temblor’s destruction was much more extensive--and expensive--for Burbank than once thought. Days after the quake, losses to Burbank were estimated to be $25 million.
“I think the quake all over was much more severe than people initially realized,” said Carolyn Berlin, co-founder of the Verdugo-Magnolia Park Homeowners Assn.
To cope with the damage to public facilities, the Burbank City Council on Tuesday approved $7.6 million in additional disaster relief money.
