From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The chairman of United Airlines, Gerald Greenwald, said Tuesday that the Chicago-based carrier will increase the size of its 25,000-member work force in California “by several thousand more over the next few years.”

But Greenwald, speaking at a travel industry convention in Sacramento, did not reveal details of the expansion.

Last year, the airline began its low-fare United Shuttle flights in California and announced the hiring of 1,700 workers nationwide as its business improved systemwide.

His comments came the same day that parent UAL Corp. reported a profitable fourth quarter, helping the airline to its first money-making year since 1990.
