PACOIMA : El Nido Tackles Teen-Age Pregnancy
Despite her namesake, Patricia Cervantes’ mission is anything but quixotic.
Part of Cervantes’ job at El Nido Family Services in Pacoima is to teach teen-agers that pregnancy and extramarital sex aren’t hip. That’s no easy task in Pacoima, which has one of the highest teen-age pregnancy rates in Los Angeles.
But Cervantes, who will address the Pacoima Coordinating Council today at noon, believes her organization and others dedicated to tackling teen-age pregnancy in the area are making a difference.
El Nido programs use young mothers to deliver a sharp message to their peers who are still in school: Teen-age pregnancy is physically painful, socially irresponsible and, sometimes, emotionally devastating.
The Pacoima Coordinating Council meets at the Boys & Girls Club of the San Fernando Valley, 11251 Glenoaks Blvd.
