Orange County Almanac
The Laguna Beach County Water District is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
“We’re the second-oldest water district of our type in the state,” General Manger Joe Sovella said.
“County” is in the district’s name because it was formed in 1925, two years before Laguna Beach incorporated. The district headquarters, next to City Hall, was built in 1927 and remodeled in 1990.
A happy/sad face monitor once stood out front to let residents know if water consumption was up or down. But with water use now steadily lower, the district removed the sign six months ago so the smiling face wouldn’t lose its impact, Sovella said.
