COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Kellogg a Serial Shooter for UMass

Derek Kellogg showed he could make big baskets as well as set his teammates up for them.

Kellogg, a point guard known more for his passing than his scoring, made two three-point shots in a 10-0 run early in the second half that helped top-ranked Massachusetts beat St. Bonaventure, 79-62, on Monday night at Amherst, Mass.

The victory extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 15 games.

With opponents concentrating on stopping Lou Roe and Marcus Camby inside, outside shooting is critical for Massachusetts.

“Derek Kellog has got to step up and take open shots. He can’t catch it and look to penetrate,” Coach John Calipari said.

The Minutemen, 16-1 overall and 8-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, held the Bonnies (11-8, 3-4) to 8-for-30 shooting in the first half but committed 12 turnovers and held only a 30-26 lead at halftime.

St. Bonaventure was led by David Vanterpool with 21 points and Shandue McNeill with 12.

No. 10 Syracuse 76, No. 13 Georgetown 75--Lawrence Moten scored 19 points and John Wallace added 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Orangemen (16-2, 9-1) over the Hoyas (14-4, 7-3) in a Big East game at Landover, Md.

Syracuse made 18 of 24 free throws while Georgetown made only nine of 26.

The Orangemen took the lead for good at 68-67 on a rebound basket by Wallace with 2:15 to play.

Freshman Allen Iverson scored 25 points for Georgetown, which lost at home for the first time this season.

No. 18 Missouri 80, No. 11 Iowa State 71--The Tigers contained Iowa State’s Loren Meyer in the second half and got key three-point baskets from Jason Sutherland and Kendrick Moore in a Big Eight game at Ames, Iowa.

The shots by Sutherland and Kendrick capped a 14-2 run that gave Missouri (15-3, 4-2) an eight-point lead and control of the game with seven minutes left.

Fred Hoiberg made a school-record eight three-point shots and scored 29 points for Iowa State but couldn’t keep the Cyclones (17-3, 3-2) from losing at home for the first time this season. The Cyclones now play three consecutive road games, including a Feb. 8 rematch with Missouri at Columbia, Mo.

OTHER GAMES

Towson State (8-10) pulled away from weary Louisville (12-8) in the second half, holding the Cardinals to just two baskets in the final five minutes of an 81-69 upset victory at Towson, Md. Ralph Blalock scored 26 points and DeRon Robinson a career-high 20 for Towson State, including seven in a 15-4 run that gave the Tigers the lead for good. As the final buzzer sounded, many in the crowd of 4,821 poured onto the court to celebrate one of the biggest victories in the history of the Towson State basketball program.

Scott Highmark registered his fifth consecutive 20-point game and six teammates scored in double figures as St. Louis (14-4) coasted to a 112-71 victory over Chicago State (3-15) at St. Louis. Highmark scored 20 points and H Waldman added 15 for the Billikens. . . . Jeff Massey scored 20 points and led a late rally that helped Xavier (15-3, 7-0) erase a 13-point deficit in an 81-75 Midwestern Collegiate Conference victory over Loyola Chicago (4-12, 1-6) at Rosemont, Ill. . . . Tom Pipkins scored 22 points and Kevin Price added 13 as Duquesne (6-11, 3-7) ended a six-game losing streak with a 62-55 Atlantic 10 victory over Temple (9-5, 5-4) at Philadelphia. It marked the first time that the Dukes had defeated Temple twice in the same season.
