ALHAMBRA: Three months after he was elected to the City Council, Mark Paulson has been appointed Alhambra’s mayor by the council. Paulson, 37, won his 1st District seat without opposition Nov. 8. The rookie councilman was sworn in as mayor at Monday night’s council session. The council rotates the position among its members’ districts every nine months. Paulson’s district was up for the position.

IRWINDALE: A citizens group seeking to permit card clubs in the city gathered nearly twice the number of valid signatures required to put the matter to a vote. The county registrar of voters validated 195 and 196 signatures for each of two ballot measures to allow card club casinos in the city. The group had gathered a total of 230 signatures for each, but only needed 100 valid signatures. The City Council is expected to review the results at the council meeting Thursday, and will either set a date for the special election, or will send the matter to staff for investigation.

WALNUT: The county will hold a free roundup of household hazardous wastes at Mt. San Antonio Community College on Saturday. Residents may dispose of toxic household waste, such as used paint, motor oil, pesticides, solvents, cleaning compounds and automobile batteries.
