NHL ROUNDUP : Flyers Finish Strong to Beat Penguins
Eric Lindros scored the tie-breaker during a four-goal third period to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night at Philadelphia.
Lindros, who assisted on Brent Fedyk’s power-play goal in the first period, broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal at 9:51 of the third. Kevin Dineen, Dimitri Yushkevich and Michael Renberg completed the scoring.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Fedyk and Yushkevich. The Penguins tied it in the second on goals by Shawn McEachern and John Cullen.
Buffalo 4, Montreal 1--Donald Audette scored two goals and Dominik Hasek stopped 23 shots at Buffalo as the Canadiens lost their fifth game in a row.
Wayne Presley and Bob Sweeney also scored for the Sabres, who are 2-0-1 in their last three games. Alexander Mogilny added three assists.
Montreal has been outscored, 24-4, in its last five games and has lost four in a row on the road.
Boston 5, Hartford 2--Three different Boston skaters each had a goal and an assist in the first period at Hartford, Conn.
Ray Bourque, Mats Naslund and Dave Reid each had two points in the game’s first 20 minutes to help give the Bruins an early 4-2 lead. Cam Neely and Brent Hughes also scored as Boston improved to 4-1-1 in its last six games.
Hartford goaltender Sean Burke, who was back in net after missing two games because of a groin strain, was replaced 7:29 into the second period after giving up five goals on 24 shots, the last by Neely that put Boston ahead, 5-2.
Washington 4, New York Rangers 2--Dale Hunter broke a 2-2 tie early in the third period and added two assists at Landover, Md., ending the Rangers’ four-game unbeaten streak.
Hunter was in front when he deflected a pass from defenseman Jim Johnson past Ranger goaltender Mike Richter 1:07 into the third period to give the Capitals a season-high third consecutive victory.
Ottawa 3, New York Islanders 1--Alexei Yashin scored the tie-breaker in a two-goal second period at Ottawa.
The teams were tied, 1-1, after the first period as Derek King scored for the Islanders and Yashin for the Senators.
Yashin then scored his 11th of the season at 9:45 of the second period before Pat Elynuik capped the scoring at 17:41.
Winnipeg 3, Calgary 2--Alexei Zhamnov had two goals and an assist at Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Dave Manson scored Winnipeg’s third goal and Joel Otto and Ronnie Stern scored for Calgary.
Teemu Selanne also record his 100th career assist for the Jets.
Edmonton 4, Detroit 2--Kelly Buchberger’s short-handed goal at 2:19 of the third period lifted the Oilers to the victory at Edmonton.
With Oiler Todd Marchant in the penalty box for interference, Buchberger took a drop pass inside the Wings’ blue line and beat goaltender Chris Osgood with a slap shot to the glove side, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Rookie David Oliver scored his second goal of the game with two minutes remaining to ensure the victory.
Dallas 2, St. Louis 1--Second-period goals by Peter Zezel and Trent Klatt and Andy Moog’s 30-save performance at Dallas sent the Stars to their fourth consecutive victory.
