Williams Dominates Ferguson
PALM SPRINGS — Jeremy Williams, battering his opponent’s face with a strong left hand, stopped Jesse Ferguson at the end of the seventh round of their heavyweight bout Sunday night.
Williams of Long Beach raised his record to 21-1 with 18 knockouts while Ferguson fell to 20-14 with 14 knockouts.
Ferguson’s right eye was completely closed and referee Terry Smith stopped the bout as the eighth round was to begin.
There were no knockdowns, but Williams won every round on each of the three judges’ scorecards in the scheduled 10-round fight at the Palm Springs Riviera.
“I was doing what my trainer (Joe Goossen) told me to do,” said Williams, 215 pounds. “I was prepared to go 10 rounds, but a knockout is always a bonus.”
“I have no excuses,” said Ferguson, who weighed in at 245. “I was overweight, I didn’t run enough.”
