Marina’s Bruch Resigns Due to Conflict With Club Team
As expected, Marina girls’ soccer Coach Bobby Bruch resigned Tuesday because of a Southern Section rule that forbids him from coaching his high school players on a club team.
Bruch announced his resignation during a Marina assembly honoring the Division I champion Vikings. In four seasons under Bruch, Marina was 83-8-8, won three consecutive section titles and has an active unbeaten streak of 61 games--59 victories and two ties.
Bruch, 28, coaches the Shamrocks, an under-16 club team in Mission Viejo that is expected to challenge for a national title. Marina sophomores Megan Orach and Anne Giallonardo are planning to join Bruch’s club team this week.
Orach and Giallonardo’s high school eligibility would be in danger if they joined the Shamrocks before Bruch resigned.
“It’s very sad,” Bruch said. “I’d love to stay at Marina and have the opportunity to continue the streak.”
