Alex Jimenez, a senior who helped lead Bosco Tech to a co-championship in Southern Section Division V soccer, was named offensive player of the year in his division by the Southern California High School Soccer Coaches Assn.

Jimenez was among 14 boys from the San Gabriel Valley who were selected first-team All-Southern in their divisions. They include:

Division II: Midfielder Mark Samples of Rowland.

Division III: Forward Paul Miles of Arcadia and forward Aaron Kovall of Wilson.

Division IV: Forward Craig Hart of Temple City, midfielder Cesar Jimenez of El Monte and goalkeeper Tony Skogen of San Marino.

Division V: Forward Alex Jiminez, forward Froylan Mendoza and midfielder Joshua Lagoo of Bosco Tech; midfielder Matt Evans, defender Chris Pernevi and goalkeeper Adam Throop of Maranatha; defender David Cann of Pasadena Poly and defender John Otten of La Salle.

* In each of the past two seasons, the Bishop Amat baseball team’s first loss of the season was its last.

Unfortunately for the Lancers, the defeats came in the Southern Section playoffs and ended otherwise noteworthy efforts.

So perhaps it was a good omen that Bishop Amat lost to St. Bernard, 8-6, in its Del Rey League opener Monday, ending the Lancers’ 58-game regular-season win streak.

No one is shedding any tears for Bishop Amat, which is still considered the strongest team in the area.

The Lancers, under Coach Glenn Martinez, are led by infielder/pitcher Steve Medrano and pitcher Eric Valenzuela (1-1), who was 13-0 in his first two seasons.

* The Pasadena Games track meet, which draws more than 80 high school teams, is scheduled for Saturday at Occidental College.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The 37th annual Mt. San Antonio College Relays will be staged April 13-15 at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut.

The open meet will be preceded with a week of competition at the junior high, high school, community college, university and master’s divisions. The event is expected to attract more than 15,000 participants, including an array of world-class performers.

COLLEGES

David Brende of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the 200-yard freestyle and led the Stags to sixth place at the NCAA Division III championships last weekend at Oxford, Ohio.

Kenyon College (Ohio) won the championship with 687 points. Claremont finished with 165.

* A banquet to honor Jim Milhon, who coached football at Azusa Pacific for 17 years, is scheduled for April 1 at the Upper Turner Campus Center at Azusa Pacific.

Former players, family, friends and members of the local community are invited to attend the event, which includes a dinner and reception.

* The Azusa Pacific baseball team saw its 11-game win streak end when Biola defeated the Cougars, 6-5, in 10 innings for its first win over Azusa Pacific since 1986.

Azusa Pacific entered the week 19-5 and 10-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Brain Hagerty is 6-0 with a 2.12 earned-run average for Azusa Pacific, which is scheduled to play Chapman today and Eastern Connecticut State on Friday.

* Four more track and field athletes from Azusa Pacific qualified for the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics outdoor championships with their performances last week at the Easter Relays in Santa Barbara.

Ryan Root qualified in the hammer with a winning throw of 169 feet 3 inches. Denes Balazar and John Gachao qualified in the 5,000 meters in 14:42 and 14:43.5 respectively.

Michelle Teodoro qualified in the women’s 3,000 meters in 10:08.24.

* Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team swept a doubleheader at Hawaii Hilo, then was swept in a doubleheader by the Vulcans last week.

Pomona (14-15) continued the Hawaiian trip today with a doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Torrie Edwards, Pomona--Edwards won the 100 and the 200 at the San Gabriel Valley Invitational track meet at Azusa Pacific.

Edwards won the 100 in 12.2 seconds and the 200 in 25.0.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

David Brende, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps--Brende, a freshman from Los Angeles, won the 200-yard freestyle and led Claremont to sixth place at the NCAA Division III championships last weekend at Oxford, Ohio.

Brende won his event in 1 minute 39.80 seconds.

MISCELLANY

Applications are being accepted for 10 $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded to soccer players from the Ford Motor Co. Graduating high school seniors, high school graduates who intend to start college and continuing college students who are participating at the Pele Soccer Center in South El Monte or any other community served by the center are eligible. * The 29th annual Mt. Wilson Trail Run will be staged Monday, beginning in Sierra Madre. The 8.6-mile race features an elevation gain of almost 2,100 feet. Entry is limited to 300 competitors. Information: (818) 355-2355.

* Applications are being accepted for the Crown Valley Senior Games for athletes 50 and older as of May 6. Competition will be staged in five-year age divisions, up to and including age 95. Information: (818) 397-4062.

* The city of Pasadena has begun registration for a young women’s softball league for players ages 13 to 17.

There is no charge for participation in the league, which will begin play April 14 at Brookside and Robinson parks. High school players are eligible after their seasons end.

* The city of San Gabriel will stage its annual city track meet on April 8 at San Gabriel High.

The meet is open to all students born between 1980 and 1985. Students may sign up with the after-school sports coach at their campus.

* The city of Covina is accepting registration for roller hockey and pee-wee and youth track programs.

The roller hockey program is for ages 6 to 15 and will consist of five practice sessions and nine games plus playoffs for qualified teams. Play begins in April.

The pee-wee program is for ages 5 to 7 and the youth program is for ages 8 to 11. Youngsters will learn fundamentals of the sports and will participate in the Mt. San Antonio College invitational youth days and Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation meets.

* A golf tournament sponsored by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce is scheduled for June 19 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.
