LONG BEACH : Ex-City Cashier Gets 3 Years for Embezzling
A former head cashier for the city has been sentenced to three years in state prison for embezzling $203,000 from the Planning and Building Department.
Mary Alicia Valdez, 38, pleaded guilty Jan. 3 to grand theft and embezzlement of public money by a public official, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Ralph Plummer.
Charges against the Bellflower resident were filed in October after an investigation showed she had been underreporting money collected from county permit applicants and pocketing much of it, Plummer said.
Prosecutors alleged that Valdez stole the money between Dec. 1, 1990, and Aug. 12, 1994.
