PREP ROUNDUP : Five Golfers Break 40 as Santa Margarita Trounces Estancia

Santa Margarita had what Coach Tim O’Hara called its “best match in years” in a nonleague 180-198 victory over Estancia in nonleague golf at Costa Mesa Country Club.

Five Eagle players broke 40, and three were below par 35. Greg Pittenger was medalist for Santa Margarita (5-0) with a 33, Kelly Craig and Stephen Wagner shot 34s, Sean Lim had 38 and Tucker Brown 39.

In other nonleague golf:

Los Amigos 210, Westminster 226--Matt Stafford shot a one-over-par 37 at Mile Square for Los Amigos (8-3).

Ocean View 416, Marina 428--Bobby Johnson was the medalist for Ocean View, with a 78.

Valencia 399, El Dorado 436--James Wooley shot a 76 and teammate Chris Porter had a 79 for Valencia (5-1) on par-72 Alta Vista.

Servite 185, Fountain Valley 201--Jeff McGraw shot a one-under 32 and Adam Ainbinder shot a 35 for Servite (4-1) at Fullerton golf course.

Tustin 211, Costa Mesa 218--Jimmy Lee shot a two-over 37 for Tustin (5-1). Andrew Zanzig was the medalist, shooting par 35 for Costa Mesa.

Trabuco Hills 203, Temecula Valley 234--Jordan Woffinden shot a one-over par 37 and Nick Petralia shot a three-over 39 for Trabuco Hills (3-1) at Coto de Caza.

In Century League golf:

Villa Park 206, Canyon 223--Adam Hambarian was the medalist for Villa Park (7-2, 1-0), with a 40.

In Freeway League boys’ swimming:

Sunny Hills 117, Troy 68--Cody Bitterlich won the 100 butterfly (59.5) for visiting Sunny Hills (3-1, 1-0).

In Golden West League boys’ swimming:

Santa Ana 87 1/2, Westminster 44 1/4--Cesar Macedo and Luis Hernandez each won in three different events to lead Santa Ana in a league opener. Macedo won in the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, and was on the winning 400 freestyle relay. Hernandez finished first in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 128, Estancia 41--University (2-0-1, 1-0) finished first in every event of its season opener. Dan Hayes won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, and competed in the winning 200 medley and the 200 freestyle relays. Mark Sullivan took first in the 50 free and the 100 free.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ swimming

University 122, Estancia 48--Marilyn Nguyen won the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes 41.56 seconds for University in the first Pacific Coast league girls’ swimming match of the season. Nguyen also won the 100 backstroke (1:11.39), and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Brea Olinda 14, Orange 4--Ben Springer won his doubles sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 and Madhav Boddula won 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 for host Brea Olinda (8-1). Orange is 3-4.

Foothill 10, Laguna Hills 8--Senior Ryan Thompson won his sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles for Foothill, to boost his set record to 14-1. At No. 2, freshman Joost Hol stayed undefeated, dropping only two games in three sets. Hol is 12-0 in sets.

Fountain Valley 9, El Toro 9 (Fountain Valley wins on games, 74-68)--Jason Kasner was the only Fountain Valley player to win all three matches, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.

Irvine 10, Capistrano Valley 8--Sid Khanijou and John Manley swept No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, for visiting Irvine (6-3).

Laguna Beach 15, San Clemente 3--Steve Seybold and Aaron Talarico improved to 12-0 on the season, sweeping No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3, for host Laguna Beach (5-4).

Mission Viejo 11, Santa Margarita 7--Eduardo Kohlberg swept his singles’ sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, and Christian Fernandez and Josh Fair swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, for seventh-ranked Mission Viejo (4-2).

Servite 12, Sonora 6--All three singles players swept their matches for Servite. Ryan Moore didn’t drop a game at No. 1; Mike Luciano won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2; and Ali Sajadian won 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3.

Trabuco Hills 13, Estancia 5--Nolan Cooper won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-4, for Trabuco Hills (2-5).

Villa Park 14, Valencia 4--Ryan Hollis dropped one game in three sets at No. 1 singles for Villa Park (9-0), and B.K. Chang shut out two of three opponents while winning three sets at No. 3 singles.
