Saluting the Spirit of Adventure

Three women travelers who swam the Red Sea, climbed Mount Aconcagua and ran across the United States will share their experiences at an anniversary celebration in Beverly Hills next month for Travelin’ Woman, a newsletter devoted exclusively to the footloose female.

Moderating the program will be Nancy Mills, a former publicist who began producing the newsletter a year ago with no subscribers and a budget of about $400.

She calls it the “know-before-you-go-guide for woman travelers.”

“This is a special night,” said Mills, 42, who has seen the newsletter’s circulation increase to more than 500 readers worldwide. “I felt it would be really wonderful to have an anniversary party and celebrate that we made it.”

Speakers at the event, billed as “A Toast to Three Remarkable Travelin’ Women,” will include Lynne Cox, 38. Inspired by progress in the Middle East peace process, she swam the 14-mile Gulf of Aqaba between Egypt, Israel and Jordan last year.

Another speaker, Annabel Marsh, ran across the United States at age 61 with her running partner, Caroline Merrill.

The pair averaged 30 miles per day, six days a week, during the 3,261-mile jaunt from Boston to San Francisco. A decade older now, she plans to complete her 100th marathon later this year, in San Francisco.

Nancy Knoble, 46, a survivor of breast cancer and a member of the Expedition Inspiration Team, climbed Argentina’s Mount Aconcagua, at 22,831 feet, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere.

One of three climbers out of 17 who made it to the top, she carried prayer flags to express the hope of finding a cure for breast cancer and hung them at the summit.

“These women have really combined travel with courage,” said Mills, who writes and edits the monthly newsletter from her Bel-Air home. “They are traveling, seeing the world and using courage to establish these terrific feats.”

She said this celebration provides the perfect opportunity to share the idea that women can use travel as a vehicle to accomplish many things in their lives.

“As I have become more immersed (in the world of travel), it became very obvious that there are women out there who are remarkable,” she said. “That doesn’t mean you can’t do the same. I hope people walk away (from the party) inspired. In travel, you never know what corner you are going to turn.”
