HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Verstraeten Pitches No-Hitter
Robert Verstraeten pitched a no-hitter and struck out 12 to propel Ventura High to a 3-0 victory over visiting San Marcos in a Channel League baseball game Friday.
Verstraeten (2-1) faced 23 batters and walked two for Ventura (6-1, 3-0 in league play) in the 1-hour 45-minute contest.
Right fielder Chad Anderson made an over-the-shoulder catch on a long fly ball with one out in the seventh inning to preserve the no-hitter for Verstraeten.
The loss was the first of the season for San Marcos (6-1, 2-1).
Rio Mesa 10, Oxnard 3--Eric Flores hit two home runs and a single, and Vince Roman and Manuel Chavira each added three hits for the Spartans (5-3, 2-1) in a Channel League game at Oxnard.
Santa Barbara 11, Hueneme 8--J.J. Purdy had four runs batted in for the Dons (3-3, 1-1) in a Channel League victory over host Hueneme.
The Vikings (8-2, 2-2) were led by Jess Sanchez, who homered and drove in three runs.
Glendale 19, Muir 1--Bryan Chan followed up last week’s no-hitter over Pasadena with a two-hit, eight-strikeout performance in a Pacific League game at Muir.
Fernando Rios had two doubles, a triple, two RBIs and scored two runs for the Dynamiters (4-1, 2-1).
Simi Valley 12, Newbury Park 2--Adam Springston and Neil Oberheide combined on a one-hitter for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley.
Casey Vermette scored three runs and had two hits for Simi Valley (8-2, 2-0).
Brent Bush had the only hit, a bloop single in the third inning, for Newbury Park (3-5, 0-2).
Channel Islands 6, Agoura 3--Dennis Brown and Steve Juarez each had two hits, and Kenny Long and Jared Krehbiel homered for the Raiders (4-5, 2-0) in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.
Mitch Tisher had three hits and Manny Mosqueda struck out 10 in a complete game for Agoura (6-3, 1-1).
Hart 13, Burbank 0--The Indians (1-6, 1-0) broke their season-long losing streak with home runs from Brian Baron, Eric Horvat and Kevin Hyde in the Foothill League opener at Burbank.
Hart led, 2-0, in the fifth inning when Baron hit a grand slam to start the rout.
Chris Baker limited the Bulldogs (3-5-1, 0-1) to three hits in six innings and struck out eight.
Crespi 11, St. Francis 7--Brian Luderer had three hits and Brad Farlow added two for the Celts in a Mission League game at Valley College.
Calabasas 22, Malibu 0--Brett Niles and Josh Nadler each had four RBIs for the Coyotes (5-0, 2-0) in the Frontier League game at Calabasas.
Niles was three for three, walked twice and scored four runs. Nadler had two hits and scored twice.
Santa Paula 6, Nordhoff 5--Rocky Frutos had four hits, including two home runs, but it was his 40-foot dribbler with the bases loaded and two out in the 11th that drove in the winning run for the Cardinals (4-0, 2-0) in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula.
Mark Gardia had three hits for Nordhoff (4-3, 1-2).
Moorpark 5, Santa Clara 1--Travis Ehrlich struck out five and scattered four hits to help the visiting Musketeers (3-4, 2-1) in a Frontier League game at Santa Clara.
Oak Park 7, St. Bonaventure 1--Bryan McMullen had two hits and three RBIs for the Eagles (3-1, 3-0) in a Tri-Valley League game at St. Bonaventure.
L.A. Baptist 4, Brentwood 2--John Devirian had two hits and an RBI for the Knights (5-1) in a nonleague game at Brentwood.
Kennedy 5, Van Nuys 0--Adam Rofer and Aldo Pinto each had two hits, an RBI and scored a run for the Golden Cougars (6-1) in a pool play game of the San Fernando tournament.
SOFTBALL
Buena 3, Dos Pueblos 0--Nicole Greathouse (1-1) threw a no-hitter, struck out seven and walked two for Buena (6-2, 3-0) in the Channel League game at Dos Pueblos.
Kim Herman had three hits and drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Kris Herman added two hits and an RBI.
Newbury Park 9, Simi Valley 0--Kristi Fox--the 1994 Times’ Ventura County player of the year--pitched a one-hitter, struck out nine and walked one for the Panthers (3-1, 2-0) in a Marmonte League game at Simi Valley (2-3, 0-1).
Senior catcher Mandy Kiningham singled, doubled and tripled, drove in two runs and scored once for Newbury Park, and Fox had three of the Panthers’ 16 hits.
Camarillo 1, Agoura 0--Jefflyn Spahr scored the only run of the Marmonte League game at Camarillo in the first on a single by teammate Kourtney Edge.
Melanie Richardson struck out nine for Camarillo (5-1, 2-0).
Hoover 1, Burbank 0--Tina Kinney threw a three-hitter and struck out 13 for the Tornadoes (6-3) in an eight-inning nonleague game at Burbank.
Moorpark 4, Santa Clara 0--Senior Mindy Penrod allowed two hits and had 14 strikeouts for the Musketeers (3-1, 2-0) in a Frontier League game.
BOYS’ TRACK
Birmingham 79, Cleveland 48--Russel Burwell won the 100 in 10.9 seconds, the 200 in 22.1 and ran a leg on the Cavaliers’ victorious 400-meter relay team that set a school record of 42.8, but Birmingham won its 60th consecutive dual meet in the Northwest Valley Conference contest.
Marvin Powell had the top mark of the meet for Birmingham (3-0, 3-0) with a time of 15.0 in the 110 high hurdles.
Taft 82, San Fernando 44--Moses Backus won two events and anchored two victorious relay teams for the Toreadors (3-0, 3-0) in the Northwest Valley Conference meet at Taft.
Backus timed 22.2 in the 220-yard dash, 51.6 in the 440 and ran the final leg on Taft teams that timed 44.5 in the 440 relay and 3 minutes 45.8 seconds in the mile relay.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Van Nuys d. Grant, 15-12, 15-9, 16-14--Ricardo Hernandez and Eugene Kwong each had 14 kills for the visiting Wolves in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Grant.
Benedicto Santiago had 51 assists for Van Nuys (7-0, 4-0), the runner-up in last year’s City Section 3-A Division championship.
