BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : The Defense Never Rests
First baseman J.T. Snow, who sprinted back about 120 feet before making a spectacular diving catch of Ed Sprague’s popup in front of the bleachers in foul territory Sunday, gave the SkyDome fans an assist on the play.
“Certain people in the crowd were standing up like they were going to catch the ball, so I just ran right at them,” Snow said. “Then I looked up again, and sure enough I was right on the ball.”
Snow’s fourth-inning catch set the tone for an outstanding defensive game, which included catcher Andy Allanson’s throwing out Devon White on a steal attempt in the seventh inning, second baseman Damion Easley’s diving to field Sprague’s grounder up the middle in the ninth and shortstop Gary DiSarcina’s lunging grab of Lance Parrish’s pop to short left-center field to end the game.

Catcher Jorge Fabregas remained at the team’s Toronto hotel Sunday after becoming the latest Angel to be stricken with flu. Reliever Russ Springer couldn’t make Saturday’s game, right fielder Tim Salmon sat out the last spring training game and Manager Marcel Lachemann said pitcher Mark Langston wasn’t feeling well Sunday.
