AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Shaky Hershiser Good Enough to Win, 3-1

Right-hander Orel Hershiser (2-1) checked the Orioles on three hits over five innings and Manny Ramirez doubled home two runs in the fourth inning Sunday at Baltimore as Cleveland won for the 10th time in 13 games, defeating the Orioles, 3-1.

“They could have killed me today. . . . At times, it seemed I pitched better when I got in trouble,” said Hershiser, who walked two and struck out none. “I sure was setting the table for the Orioles pretty much.”

In the three-game series, Cleveland’s Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, Albert Belle and Eddie Murray were a combined 6 for 40 with one run batted in, that coming on Murray’s solo home run in the eighth inning.

Ramirez, though, was three for nine with three RBIs. Cleveland scored only seven runs in the three games.

Jose Mesa, the fifth Cleveland pitcher, got the final two outs for his third save.

Chicago 10, Seattle 2--Jim Abbott pitched seven strong innings and Tim Raines hit a two-run homer and two-run double at Seattle.

Abbott (2-1) defeated Seattle for the first time since June 26, 1992, improving his career record against them to 4-9. In his seven innings, he gave up two runs on six hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out five.

Ken Griffey homered for the second day in a row for Seattle.

Salvaging the finale of a three-game series, the White Sox drove Jim Converse (0-2) out of the game in the fifth as Raines hit his third homer of the season after Lance Johnson’s single. Ron Villone walked Ron Karkovice with the bases loaded for the third Chicago run in the inning.

Detroit 8, Texas 3--Mike Moore pitched his way out of several jams at Arlington, Tex.

Moore (3-1) gave up only two hits, but tied his career-high with seven walks--all in the first four innings. He then retired seven consecutive before being relieved.

Ranger starter Rick Helling (0-2) gave up a homer to Cecil Fielder in the second inning, his fifth of the year, and a two-run single to John Flaherty later in the inning.

Boston 3, New York 2--Mike Macfarlane homered to the deepest part of Fenway Park with one out in the bottom of the ninth off Steve Howe for the victory.

Macfarlane crushed an 0-1 pitch about 10 rows into the bleachers over the 420-feet sign in center field.

Toronto 8, Milwaukee 3--Rookie Shawn Green hit his first major league home run and made a diving catch that snuffed a sixth-inning rally at Milwaukee.

Roberto Alomar hit his sixth homer, John Olerud homered for the second consecutive game and Toronto used a five-run fifth inning to back up Pat Hentgen.

Hentgen (3-0) surrendered three runs, all in the sixth inning, and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three.

The Blue Jays sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, producing seven hits and five runs, including Green’s solo shot that chased Cal Eldred (1-1).

Oakland 12, Minnesota 3--Geronimo Berroa hit his fifth and sixth home runs of the season and Terry Steinbach hit his fifth career grand slam to lead the Athletics at Minneapolis.

Ruben Sierra added three RBIs, including a two-run homer, Berroa had four RBIs and Steinbach added a double and single for Oakland.

Todd Stottlemyre (2-0) scattered eight hits in eight innings, walking one and striking out six in his fourth start of the season.
