CLUB REVIEW : Live Music in Hip, Friendly Spaceland
Dreams in Spaceland may sound like the title of a cheesy B-movie, but it’s actually the new name for a cool live-music club in Silver Lake.
Dreams in Spaceland, so called because the nightclub’s original name is Dreams, manages to be hip, friendly and casual--no small feat. The roomy layout and unpretentious vibe make Spaceland an ideal location to see alternative acts, which are currently booked about five nights a week. A recent appearance by ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters put the Christmas-light-adorned club on the map, but you can expect a variety of good music most evenings.
On any given night, the dance floor draws a colorful array from all sexual strata: men with women, men with men, women with women, and a few less likely variations. This element makes the club a good time even if you’re goofy-footed. Although most evenings at Spaceland require nominal covers, Mondays are free--a direct challenge to attract business away from the plethora of Hollywood clubs now offering free Monday shows.
With the upcoming demise of Club Lingerie, the club that pioneered free Mondays, the unique Spaceland may win the challenge.
