Age Limit for Musicians?
The Curtis Institute Alumni Assn. is pleased to learn about the appointment of Martin Chalifour, an alumnus, to the post of concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra (Calendar, April 13). The article goes on to say that Sidney Weiss, 65, resigned the position and “left the orchestra for personal reasons.”
Is age 65 the point when orchestra members are encouraged to resign?
It would be enlightening if Ernest Fleischmann would disclose the number of musicians past age 40 who were engaged to fill vacancies during the last 10 years.
