PREP TENNIS : Santa Barbara Wins Eighth Consecutive Title
Palos Verdes Peninsula High was bucking tradition when it met Santa Barbara for the Southern Section Division I boys’ tennis championship Wednesday at the Jack Kramer Tennis Club in Rolling Hills Estates.
And tradition prevailed--in a big way.
Top-seeded Santa Barbara (24-0) won its eighth consecutive title and 10th in the last 11 years with a 14-4 victory over Peninsula (22-2).
Santa Barbara took control of the match early, leading, 4-2, after the first round of sets. Sophomore Adam Webster provided the impetus for the Dons when he came from behind to defeat Chris Lee of Peninsula, 7-6, winning a tiebreaker, 8-6.
Webster, a highly regarded sophomore, and Ian Carrera, a junior, swept their three singles sets for the Dons. In doubles, Santa Barbara’s No. 2 team of Jason Yardi and Travis Logue and No. 3 team of Charlie Stoll and Jason Marcoux each went 3-0.
Jack Trigueiro, who has coached the Dons since 1964 and guided them to 28 consecutive Channel League titles, said it was one of the most impressive victories in his coaching career.
