Wi Fires First-Round 70 for NCAA 6th-Place Tie

Westlake High graduate Charlie Wi fired a two-under-par 70 Wednesday in the first round of the 98th NCAA Division I men’s golf championship on Ohio State’s Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.

Wi, a senior at California and the Pacific 10 Conference individual champion, is in a four-way tie for sixth.

Chip Spratlin of Auburn shot 67 to claim the first-round lead in the 72-hole event.

Chad Wright of USC, a sophomore from Buena High, is one of eight players tied for 10th at 71, a group that includes Stanford’s Jerry Chang.

Chang and Wi were teammates at Westlake. Chang beat teammate Tiger Woods by two shots.

Cal is in seventh place at 292, four shots behind leader Arizona State. Stanford, the defending team champion, is tied for second at 289 and USC is tied for 11th at 295.

Baseball

Rio Mesa shortstop Eric Flores, Westlake outfielder Matt Riordan and Thousand Oaks second baseman Jack Wilson have been named co-Ventura County players of the year by coaches. Thousand Oaks right-hander Santos Mummey was the county pitcher of the year.

Flores and Ventura catcher Monty Moritz were the Channel League co-players of the year. Wilson and Riordan shared the Marmonte League’s player of the year honors. Mummey was also the Marmonte League pitcher of the year.

Kennedy High seniors Kevin Serr and George Kassis have been named co-players of the year in the North Valley League. Serr, a catcher, and Kassis, a first baseman, led the Golden Cougars to the league title and tonight’s City Section 4-A Division championship game.

The Antelope Valley Mariners are holding traveling-team tryouts for players ages 7 to 14, June 4 and 11.

Softball

Camarillo first baseman Jessica Ziese was named the Marmonte League’s most valuable player, and Westlake pitcher Kelly DeArman was named most valuable pitcher. Both are juniors.

Jessie Davenport, a pitcher from Thousand Oaks High, threw two shutouts and led the California Waves to the Hardcore Softball tournament championship last weekend in Oceanside.
