THOUSAND OAKS : Fire Forces Seniors to Evacuate Complex
Dozens of senior citizens at a Thousand Oaks retirement apartment complex were evacuated Friday after a small fire started in a clothes dryer.
The first-floor residents at the Hillcrest Inn at 405 Hodencamp Road had to leave their rooms for about 90 minutes because of the excessive smoke from the fire, Ventura County Fire Department dispatcher Vicki Sosa said.
The fire in the complex’s laundry room caused no damage to the three-story structure but $2,500 in damage to contents, mostly washers and dryers, Sosa said.
The two-alarm fire was called in at 8:33 a.m. and was extinguished 10 minutes after firefighters arrived.
Sosa said 30 apartments at the complex, each with one or two residents, were evacuated until the smoke cleared.
