Central Los Angeles : 7 Cities Plan $1-a-Ride Shuttle
Seven cities have teamed up to buy five 15-passenger vans and will run their own dollar-a-ride shuttle service.
The shuttles will help commuters without cars get to places more quickly than on Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses and at a fraction of the cost of a taxi ride. Urban planners expect the vans, fueled by natural gas, to help cut air pollution as well.
The participating cities are Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon.
Starting in August, the vans will travel on regularly scheduled routes through the cities, but drivers will be able to veer off the routes to pick up passengers.
