CLUB REVIEW : Clear View of ‘70s Absurdity at Windows

There are a few moments when a place really shines. In a city as trendy as Los Angeles, these moments usually come right after a club opens--witness Jones--or once it’s been around long enough to become kitsch, as with the 55-year-old Dresden Room.

With ‘70s redux everywhere you look--music, films, literature, fashion--Windows on Hollywood at the top of the Holiday Inn has reached its personal nirvana. The structure was built in 1972, a vintage apparent in every facet of the turquoise (!) interior.

Not only do two platforms in the round, four-level club make a full rotation each hour, but Windows is also encased in a building that exemplifies the once-loathed, now celebrated architecture of its era. Sadly, the owners recently gave the building a $2-million face lift, changing the waaaay-’70s, multicolored exterior. At least they picked beige.

Windows on Hollywood’s entertainment, which is the same Tuesday through Saturday, this month features John Michael Ferrari, who sings and dances with Rosemary Richards in the truly old-school cabaret vein.

Earlier this week, a record release party was thrown for British brats Shampoo, but the opening act, Adore O’Hara, was the real star. A drag queen who sings like Aunt Bea on steroids, he reminded us all with dignified perfection why we loved the ‘70s. They were absurd.
