Sow: Heat-tolerant annual herbs ; also Asian greens (except in the deserts); summer squash (except on the coast); corn (except in the low desert and mountains).
Plant: Heat-tolerant perennial herbs . Also celeriac/leaf celery (except in the deserts and mountains).
Harvest: Asian greens, common beans, cucumbers, perennial herbs, New Zealand spinach, green onions, radishes, shallot greens, summer squash. Also cabbage, potatoes, salad greens (except in the low desert); eggplant, okra, peppers, tomatillos/tomatoes (except in the mountains); beets, broccoli, carrots, chard, (except in the deserts); corn (except in the low desert and mountains); melons/watermelons (except on the coast and in the mountains).
COASTAL CLIMATES
Sow: All beans but favas/limas, beets, cauliflower, chard, green onions, radishes, salad greens.
Harvest: Lima beans, Brussels sprouts, collards/kale, green garlic, all peas, strawberries.
LOW DESERT
Sow: Gourds/pumpkins/winter squash.
HIGH DESERT
Harvest: Celeriac/leaf celery.
INTERIOR CLIMATES
(Where fuchsias won’t grow)
Harvest: Cowpeas/horticultural beans, celeriac/leaf celery, all onions.
(Where fuchsias grow fairly well)
Sow: All beans but favas/limas, carrots.
Plant: Broccoli, cauliflower, tomatillos/tomatoes.
Harvest: All of non-fuchsia interior except celeriac, plus salsify/scorzonera.
MOUNTAINS
6,000 feet and above:
Sow: Common beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, leaf celery, chard, nasturtiums, New Zealand spinach, onion family, peas, radishes, salad greens, salsify/scorzonera, spinach, turnips.
Plant: Cucumbers, small tomatoes, potatoes.
Harvest: Brussels sprouts, collards/kale, leeks, all peas, onions, spinach, turnips.
MOUNTAINS
6,000 feet and below:
Sow: All of high mountains plus cowpeas/horticultural beans/limas.
Plant: All of high mountains plus peanuts, sweet potato slips, tomatoes/tomatillos.
Harvest: All of high mountains.
KEY
Asian greens: Non-heading Chinese cabbage, Chinese kale, garland chrysanthemum, komatsuna (mustard spinach), mizuna , pak choi, rosette pak choi.
When seeds can be sown, seedlings of the same crop can be planted. All crops can be grown in containers.
