MOM GRAD: Lydia Nolasco made it. The 17-year-old mother of a 2-year-old son, who drew attention for her determined battle to complete high school, graduated from San Fernando High on Wednesday night. “Finally, the struggle is over,” sighed the Pacoima girl who skipped her senior prom to save money for her son. . . . Not exactly. The previous day she had signed up for summer classes at Valley College, beginning what she hopes is the long grind to the next graduation, years in the future. “I’ll go on to college even though I’m scared, but I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do,” she said. “I want to get this education over with and get on to the real world.”
NO HARD FEELINGS: What do Calabasas resident Barry Williams and Roger Clinton have in common? Well, they wrote books with similar titles. Williams wrote “Growing Up Brady,” memoirs of his childhood spent playing oldest son Greg Brady on “The Brady Bunch.” It was published in 1992. Now there’s Roger Clinton’s “Growing Up Clinton.” . . . As a Brady, Williams also has a lot in common with Bill Clinton, quipping: “I know what it’s like to be embarrassed by your younger brothers.”
CO-ED CHEERS: At Canoga Park High, the cheerleading squad--headed by Jennifer Harris, perched atop George Shabazz’s shoulders above--is extremely competitive . . . for guys. Just ask Shawn Krauss, one of its eight boys. “I played baseball for two years,” he says, “but then some guys just asked me to try out for cheerleading. There’s more intensity here than in baseball.” . . . There’s plenty of winning too. The Canoga Park squad finished first in the USA Cheerleading Nationals (C8).
SAVE THE FLAG: Old Glory got a big boost Wednesday when the House approved the wording of a constitutional amendment to be submitted to the states for ratification that would permit Congress or any state to enact flag-protection laws (A1). . . . Some lawmakers and scholars say that making flag burning illegal would be an attack on citizens’ rights to express themselves. Their ranks do not include Elizabeth Kaufman, president of the San Fernando Valley Bar Assn. “I don’t think we should be burning the American flag,” she says. “There are other ways to express yourself.”
JUST SAY NO: There was no mistaking the message of a recent Valley Community Health Clinic presentation at Robert Frost Middle School in Granada Hills: Smoking is hazardous to your health (B3). . . .
