Prosecutors declined to file criminal charges Monday against a suspect who was arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with a fatal shooting outside a North Hollywood liquor store, police said.

The suspect, Oscar Gonzalez, 20, of North Hollywood, was released after prosecutors determined he acted in self-defense, officials said. Gonzalez was arrested Sunday following the shooting death Friday of Alejandro Corrales, 26, of North Hollywood, LAPD Detective Mike Coffey said.

Witnesses told police that Corrales was talking on a telephone near a liquor store at Sherman Way and Lankershim Boulevard on Friday evening when he was approached by a man, whom Corrales tried to shoot, Coffey said. The man, however, drew two guns and shot and killed Corrales. Police detectives spent the weekend searching for the heavily tattooed gunman and on Sunday arrested Gonzalez at a jewelry manufacturing shop near the crime scene, Coffey said.
