AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Canseco, Wakefield Extend Red Sox Streak

Jose Canseco hit a three-run homer in the first inning Sunday and Tim Wakefield made it stand up with ninth-inning help from Stan Belinda as the Red Sox won their 11th game in a row, 3-2, over the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park.

Wakefield (14-1) retired the first 10 batters and had a no-hitter going until Rafael Palmeiro’s solo home run with one out in the seventh. Oriole starter Rick Krivda (0-2) struck out a career-high eight batters in seven innings, but the Orioles couldn’t overcome Canseco’s three-run homer.

Wakefield struck out three and walked three for his major league-leading 14th victory. He also leads the majors with a 1.65 earned-run average.

The Orioles knocked Wakefield out in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Bret Barberie opened with a walk and scored on Brady Anderson’s one-out triple. After Wakefield walked Palmeiro and Bobby Bonilla to load the bases, Belinda came on in relief and got Cal Ripken to hit into a game-ending double play.

New York 4, Cleveland 1--David Cone won his fourth consecutive game since joining the Yankees, Paul O’Neill hit a two-run homer and Randy Velarde had two, two-out run-scoring singles as the Yankees beat the Indians at Yankee Stadium.

It was the second victory in a row for New York after it dropped the first three games of the five-game series.

Cone (13-6) gave up six hits, but only three after the second inning. He walked three and struck out nine.

O’Neill hit a two-run homer in the first inning, his second home run in as many days and his team-leading 16th of the year.

The Yankees made it 3-0 in the fourth when Darryl Strawberry hit a one-out double off the wall in left-center and Velarde hit a two-out single to left.

Mark Clark (6-5) lasted six innings for Cleveland and gave up nine hits and four earned runs.

Milwaukee 8, Detroit 3--B.J. Surhoff drove in three runs with a single and Greg Vaughn and Mike Matheny had two-run doubles, powering the Brewers over the Tigers at Milwaukee.

Ricky Bones (7-8) pitched 6 2/3 innings with Rob Dibble relieving after Travis Fryman singled to center to make it 8-1. Bones gave up one run on seven hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.

Kansas City 6, Seattle 3--Tom Gordon picked up his first victory in a month and Michael Tucker hit his first major league homer as the Royals beat the Mariners at Kansas City.

Gordon (7-8), who has had more success against Seattle than any other club, gave up seven hits and three runs, walked two and struck out three in 6 1/3 innings. Without a victory since July 14, he raised his lifetime mark against the Mariners to 11-3.

Jeff Montgomery pitched the last two innings for his 20th save.

The Royals scored four runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead, and Tucker, recalled Saturday from Omaha, homered leading off the fifth for a five-run lead.

Chicago 8, Oakland 7--Tim Raines hit a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh to break a tie and the White Sox went on to beat the Athletics at Chicago.

Raines’ 12th homer came off Carlos Reyes (1-4). Lance Johnson drew a one-out walk and stole second and after Dave Martinez struck out, Raines delivered.

Texas 6, Toronto 1--Will Clark collected his 1,500th hit and his 200th career home run as the Rangers, at home, earned their fifth victory in six games.
