Winger Rolls to Within 12 Pins of Lead

Ron Winger of Tarzana moved into second place only 12 pins out of the lead after two rounds Friday in the PBA Jackson Senior Championship at Jackson, Mich.

John Handegard of Las Vegas held the lead with a 16-game total of 3,716, while Winger is in striking distance at 3,704.

Hobo Boothe of Canoga Park is 17th at 3,597, and Barry Gurney of West Hills follows Boothe with 3,590 pins.

The stepladder final is scheduled for Tuesday night.

Tennis

Meilen Tu of Northridge defeated Mercedes Paz of Argentina in three sets in the second round of U.S. Open Qualifying at Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Paz took the first set, 7-6, defeating Tu, 10-8, in a tiebreaker, but Tu got on track by winning the last two sets by 6-1 and 6-3 scores.

Baseball

Dave Stradling has been named baseball coach at Quartz Hill High, replacing Mike Nielson, who resigned to accept a teaching job in Virginia.

Stradling, 30, was a varsity assistant for three seasons under Neilson and coached the freshman team at Quartz Hill.

The Rebels advanced to the second round of the Southern Section Division III playoffs last season and return one of the top pitchers in the area, junior Mark Madsen.

Football

Former Hart High quarterback Mike Kocicka has transferred to Virginia Tech from Nevada Las Vegas and will spend this season as a redshirt.

Kocicka, who has three years of eligibility remaining, passed for 2,966 yards and 32 touchdowns and rushed for 11 touchdowns in 1993 while leading the Indians to the Foothill League championship.

Hart receiver Kevin McLaughlin suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb. McLaughlin, also the team’s kicker, has been cleared to play by a doctor but Coach Mike Herrington said he is doubtful for Thursday night’s game against St. Louis High in Honolulu.

Moorpark College is having a garage sale today at the school stadium from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to benefit the football program.
