Non-Native Lawns Present Problems

* The planting of non-native lawns is an error on the part of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. An enormous amount of chlorinated water is being used on the lawns. The excess water is draining into Caballero Canyon and will have harmful effects on the environment. (Does the EPA know this?) In addition, the lawns will require maintenance at increasing costs over the years and cause depletion of our water supply.

The conservancy met with the California Native Plant Society and agreed to use only native plants and grasses. The lawns are not native grasses. We also suggested using one-gallon containers to be cost-effective. The huge containers they used astounded us.

The Big Sky/Gateway Park at Reseda Ridge does not meet state guidelines; the city and county of L.A. cannot afford to maintain it. Who will pay the cost of the park? Maybe the Conejo Valley Department of Parks and Recreation will. This park is a waste of taxpayers’ money.
