Ford Recalls 390,400 Explorers for Hatch Defect: The auto maker’s recall affects 1992 and ’93 Explorer sport-utility vehicles in which the possible defect could cause the rear hatch to close unexpectedly, presenting a risk of injury to anyone standing beneath it. Ford spokeswoman Francine Romine said there have been 10 reports to the company of injuries related to the problem, which involves the failure of brackets holding the hydraulic cylinders to the hatch, known as a “lift gate.” The cylinders slow and control the movement of the hatch when it is being opened and closed and hold it in the open position. Ford will reinforce the brackets on Explorers that have the defect.
