* I read with some interest the article in The Times on Aug. 21 about the opening of the Chapman Law School. If Dean Jeremy Miller really believes that any part of the public “disdain for attorneys” is traceable to the teaching style that is commonly used in law schools, he is living in a dream world.
After practicing law in California for more than 30 years (more than 10 of which have been in Orange County), I have reached the inescapable conclusion that the public disdain for attorneys is almost solely traceable to the general public perception (which I share) that there are an incredible number of incompetent and unethical attorneys who are providing legal services in this state.
If he would devote the Chapman Law School to graduating competent and ethical attorneys, some small but significant change in the attitude of the public about attorneys may occur.
