Pacoima : Airport Conversion Plan OKd by Council

The City Council on Tuesday approved a $1.8-million grant application that will be submitted to the U.S. Economic Development Administration in hopes of getting funds to help establish an industrial park at Whiteman Airpark.

The proposed industrial park would allow the city to retain 350 jobs and create 200 to 500 new jobs, according to City Councilman Richard Alarcon, who represents the area.

The money--along with $200,000 in matching funds from Los Angeles County, which owns the airport--would pay for infrastructure improvements at the airport, such as an access road, sewers, storm drains, parking, lighting and water lines. The improvements will help make possible the conversion of part of the airport into an industrial park, which the city and county will try to lease to as many as five light manufacturing companies.

Alarcon, Mayor Richard Riordan’s office and the county’s Aviation Division have been involved in the effort to build the industrial park.
