PREP EXTRA / ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Garden Grove’s 43-Point Second Half Rips Bolsa Grande
GARDEN GROVE — Brian Jones and Jason Bruce each scored two touchdowns as host Garden Grove rolled up 43 points in the second half to overwhelm Bolsa Grande, 46-12, in a Garden Grove League game.
Garden Grove (1-4, 1-1 in league ) led by three points at halftime on Greg Pine’s 40-yard first quarter field goal, but scored four touchdowns and a safety in the third quarter.
Jones caught seven passes for 65 yards, including one for a 17-yard touchdown from quarterback Troy Haller.
The senior also set up two other touchdowns. First, he returned a Bolsa Grande punt 34 yards to the Matador 24. Two plays later, Daniel Do scored on a 17-yard run to make it, 16-0. Jones later added an 86-yard kickoff return and also had an interception that set up Bruce’s one-yard run wit nine seconds left in the third quarter. Bruce, a junior, closed the scoring with a spectacular 94-yard run late in the game.
The Garden Grove defense held the Matadors (0-5, 0-2) to just 26 yards total offense and no first downs in the first half. The Argonauts also intercepted four Matador passes.
Bolsa Grande’s offense came to life in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns. The first, a one-yard run by Joey McMahan was set up by Steve Marin’s 65-yard reception from quarterback Josh Price.
Junior Nhan Quynh added a seven yard touchdown run for Bolsa Grande with 4:42 left to play.
