Japan Calls for End to Chip Accord: A Japanese electronics industry group came out against renewal of a landmark agreement on access to Japan’s semiconductor market, a move that could put Tokyo at odds with the United States in a crucial trade area. The group’s U.S. counterpart, the Semiconductor Industry Assn., immediately said it opposes terminating the agreement. The association is backed by the Clinton Administration, which has said repeatedly that it wants the accord renewed before its expiration in July. Norio Ohga, chairman of the Electronic Industries Assn. of Japan, said the 10-year-old U.S.-Japan Semiconductor Agreement is no longer necessary because foreign semiconductors have become “indispensable” in the Japanese chip market.
