Van Nuys : LAPD Fund-Raiser Targets At-Risk Youths
The Mid-Valley Jeopardy Foundation will sponsor a fund-raising pancake breakfast Saturday for the Police Department program that keeps at-risk youths out of gangs by providing alternative activities, counseling and tutoring.
The program’s two coordinators organize after-school activities, including boxing, tutoring, games, aerobics, parenting classes and in-line skating each year for 1,000 to 1,500 elementary and middle-school youngsters.
The city picks up the tab for the two officers’ salaries, Officer Fernando Ochoa of the Van Nuys-area Jeopardy program said. But the supplies for activities and the rent for the Jeopardy building at 6015 Woodman Ave. are “all from private donations and fund raising,” Ochoa said.
Ochoa expects about 500 people at the breakfast, which is open to the public. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at Delano Park, 15100 Erwin St., Van Nuys. A $2 donation is requested. For more information or for tickets, call (818) 756-9802.
